Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony or cryptocrystalline quartz. It can range in colour from a translucent yellow to a deep reddish brown, the most brown variety is sometimes know as Sard, but there is no specific distinction. Carnelian is one of the oldest gemstones, having been used as far back as the Bronze Age. It was commonly carved by the Romans to use as a seal for letters and other documents.
It is commonly found in India and South America and has traditionally been heated to enhance it's colour.
These carnelian cabochons measure 10mm across, the price shown being for a single stone.
